In the run-up to Tuesday’s big Microsoft Xbox One reveal, many pondered the fate of the beloved Xbox 360 controller, perhaps the best gaming controller in the business. Would Microsoft make it radically different? Bigger? Unwieldy? Add a touchpad like Sony? Today we have our answer. It’s different and yet, based on what I now know and have experienced firsthand, it’s also somehow better.

Let’s start with the look and feel. Yes, it’s black (obviously, you could always get Xbox 360 controllers in a variety of colors). This is something I guessed at, as most modern-day gaming hardware favors the dark over the light. Despite the brushed finished, the controller is not rubberized. It’s hard plastic that feels good in your hands. It’ll be interesting to see how that finish responds to hours of game play. Will it make your hands more or less sweaty? Read more…

  • Bailey’s has real cream. The alcohol prevents it from spoiling for at least 2 years!

    thumbnail

Bailey’s has real cream. The alcohol prevents it from spoiling for at least 2 years!

Bailey’s Irish Cream, is an Irish Whiskey and cream based liqueur, with an alcohol content of about 17% – not too strong, and not too weak. Bailey’s was initially created by a division of International Distillers and Vinters known as the Gilbeys of Ireland. The company was looking for a beverage they could sell on the international market, and in 1974, the world renowned liqueur was invented.

Through a process that is only known by few, the liqueur and cream that make up Bailey’s Irish Cream are blended together so that they don’t separate during storage. Storage, can last up to 30 months after the beverage was first distilled.

The whiskey contains no added preservatives, because the liqueur is acting as somewhat of a natural preservative which keeps the cream from spoiling, even after two years of sitting on the shelf.

  • Privacy, public health and the moral hazard of surveillance

    thumbnail

My new Guardian column, “Privacy, public health and the moral hazard of surveillance,” discusses the way that the governments’ reliance on social networks for intelligence purposes means that they can’t intervene to help their populations get better at trading their privacy for services. That’s a crisis. If online oversharing is a public health problem, then [...]

Here’s a lesson in what not to do online, straight from the Twitter for Dummies handbook.

Our story begins on Sunday in Norwich, England, where an organized cycling event called the Boudicca Sportive ride was taking place. Tensions between cyclists and automobile drivers are well documented the world over, but this Sunday tweet from a local driver using the Twitter handle @EmmaWay20 took things to a new level:

Way probably thought her friends would get a good laugh out of how she put that road-hogging cyclist in his place — but she couldn’t possibly have expected this Twitter response from the Norwich police: Read more…

  • Everything done to WikiLeaks is now being done to US reporters

Data requests without a warrant. Government refusing to notify journalists they’re being spied on. Equating journalists and reporting to spies and espionage. Potential “conspiracy to commit espionage” charges. “Virtually every move made by the Justice Department against WikiLeaks has now also been deployed on mainstream US journalists,” writes Trevor Timm at Freedom of the Press [...]
